Wolf, Sheep, or Sheepdog?
“If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath—a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.” – “On Combat” by LTC Dave Grossman.
The concept of the sheepdog is a cherished role. The protector of the sheep. Almost a wolf but not. Choosing to defend those that need defending. It is a violent vocation. It remains violent. This world still requires that we support men and women ready to meet violence with violence. Unfortunately.
There is a role for the non-violent sheepdog. Some of my brothers may disagree but the sheepdog is anyone willing to do whatever it takes to protect those that need protecting... And we all need a little protecting from time to time...
- Stand up for those that need it and to do it when no one sees it.
- Put the needs of the many ahead of your own.
- Pick a fight with wrong.
You decide. Sheep or a sheepdog? You don't need to start a revolution. You can do a little today. You can help someone that everyone else ignores. You can make a hard decision that no one else wants to make. A 'death' for a just cause is an honorable death. That's how I want to go out.
Fully committed.
